Forever Friends : The Gods and their Vahanas
“Forever Friends : The Gods and their Vahanas” by Chitwan Mittal and illustrated by Kalyani Ganapathy. Published by AdiDevPress. A delightful book that celebrates the bonds of friendship between the Gods from Indian mythology and their special animal friends.
Animals like Nandi, Mooshak, Airavata, Garuda, Suka, Hamsa, Simha and so on are not ordinary animals. They are special friends to powerful gods and goddesses. All of them have important jobs to do. Being a vahana (mount/vehicle) to a god or a goddess is such a coveted role. They find it to be among the best things to do in the world and so magical. There are interesting stories of how they became friends with these gods and goddesses. They come together in this book to narrate these stories for the benefit of the readers. Read the beautifully illustrated book to find out all about these vahanas and the stories of how they came to be.
The book is a lovely means of talking about some of the special animals from Indian mythology to children. What makes it very appealing is that the animals narrate it in their own voices providing their perspectives. How they adore the unique bonding they share with the gods and goddesses comes across beautifully portraying their loyalty and trust. I read this book aloud to my almost five year old niece who was hooked to the engrossing narrative and the charming illustrations. The engaging questions asked by the animals made her curious to know who they were and their stories. She liked the book and kept looking at the illustrations even after we finished reading. Many of the characters were new for her making it an interesting read.
Recommended Age
The book is apt for children aged 5/6 years and above.
